The Three Days

From Thursday night through Saturday evening the church celebrates its most important narrative: the death and Resurrection of Jesus.

These three days from a single celebration in three acts:

Thursday evening we gather on the day known as Maundy Thursday ("Commandment" Thursday, from the Latin 'mandatum', since on this day Jesus gave us the new commandment to love one another. Jesus embodied that message by washing his disciples feet as the gathered for what we now know was his Last Supper with the disciples. Jesus was arrested after that supper, so at the end of our worship that evening we strip the altar to evoke that Jesus was stripped of all honor.

Friday afternoon we gather from 2:00 to 3:00, the hour of Jesus' death. Here we remember his sacrifice and pray that the world may be healed by his work of redemption.

Saturday evening the community gathers again for the conclusion of these days with a service known as the Easter Vigil. In this hour we begin in a darkened church, walk through a renewal of baptism, and enter into the joy of the Easter proclamation "He is risen!" (And then a party as we break our Lenten fast!)

(At Los Altos Lutheran Church we also have a Tenebrae service on Friday evening in which the church is slowly darkened as we read psalms and hear the seven last words of Jesus from the cross.)

All are welcome to join us in this great celebration of the mystery of redemption.
