The Easter Season is 50 days, a week of weeks, seven Sundays which culminate in the celebration of the gift of God’s Holy Spirit on Pentecost (Celebrated on June 12 in 2011. Pentecost, with Christmas and Easter, is the third Great Festival of the Christian calendar).

Although every Sunday is a remembrance and celebration of that first Easter morning, the Easter season has us linger before the empty tomb to ponder with joy the mystery of God’s vindication of Jesus. The ruling powers of Jesus’ day rejected his message and tried to show him as a broken, powerless man, but God vindicated his deeds and his message by “overturning” his sentence: Rome condemned him to death, but God gave him life!

The resurrection of Jesus also declares that human life does not have its destiny in the grave, but in the life of God. Jesus has broken down the gates of hell to set all its prisoners free.

And just as the first tomato on the vine in summer anticipates a rich harvest to come, the resurrection of Jesus anticipates God’s final transformation of the human heart and human life. Jesus is the “firstborn of the dead,” the first light of dawn, a foretaste of the coming banquet, the harbinger of that day when all humanity is gathered at one table, when every debt is forgiven, every prison opened, every heart healed and all things made new.
